Sprint Mixing – Rock Edition
Take the Sprint Mixing challenge!
Utilize this effective and fun technique, created and designed by Ken Lewis, to sharpen your instincts and increase your speed as a mix engineer. Learn to shed technology and find great balances, while honing your decision-making skills as a mixer.
So, what exactly is Sprint Mixing? It’s a series of exercises that challenges you to create the best possible mix of an entire song in just 10 minutes.
Start by watching Ken Lewis tackle a Jedi Level Sprint Mix of a rock song from faders down to finished in only 10 minutes! Then, choose a level, set the clock for 10 minutes, and create your own mix!
There are 6 skill levels in all, each with their own audio stems and templates. The levels become increasingly difficult as you progress.
The levels are:
- Intern (4 stems)
- Freshman (5 stems)
- Sophomore (7 stems)
- Junior (9 stems)
- Senior (18 stems)
- JEDI (30 stems)
If you are new to mixing, then start at the Intern level. If you already have some mixing chops, dig into one of the more advanced levels and work your way up to Jedi to compete with Ken. Then, when you finish one, start again! The Sprint Mixing drills are meant to be repeated often, to build your speed and confidence, just like an athlete trains their body. Think of these as wind sprints for your ears!
Discover how this practice technique can catapult your mixing abilities to the next level in record time. As a result, you will be able to apply these skills in real world studio situations where getting a great rough mix together quickly will make your clients happy and your sessions more productive.
Receive pre-created templates for your DAW, with your purchase, to make it easy to start – Ableton, Logic X, Pro Tools, Reaper, Studio One and Audio Stems for any other DAW. Download your template of choice and start mixing! You will also get Ken’s full mix as well as his Jedi Level Sprint mix, so you can compare your work to his.
“These are possibly the best tutorials on my entire site, but you need to put in the work. Sprint Mixing trains your ears the way an athlete trains their body” – Ken Lewis
“I’ve done close to 50 Sprint Mixes so far. They instilled a sense of confidence I have never had before. I thought it took a day to complete a mix, but I was over thinking everything” – Gary R (ASO user)
